Glassy Skyscrapers could soon generate their own power

Lance Wheeler looks at glassy skyscrapers and sees untapped potential. Houses and office buildings, he says, account for 75% of electricity use in the United States, and 40% of its energy use overall. Windows, because they leak energy, are a big part of the problem. "Anything we can do to mitigate that is going to have a very large impact," says Wheeler, a solar power expert at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.

A series of recent results points to a solution, he says: Turn the windows into solar panels. In the past, materials scientists have embedded light-absorbing films in window glass. But such solar windows tend to have a reddish or brown tint that architects find unappealing. The new solar window technologies, however, absorb almost exclusively invisible ultraviolet (UV) or infrared light. That leaves the glass clear while blocking the UV and infrared radiation that normally leak through it, sometimes delivering unwanted heat. By cutting heat gain while generating power, the windows "have huge prospects," Wheeler says, including the possibility that a large office building could power itself.

Most solar cells, like the standard crystalline silicon cells that dominate the industry, sacrifice transparency to maximize their efficiency, the percentage of the energy in sunlight converted to electricity. The best silicon cells have an efficiency of 25%. Meanwhile, a new class of opaque solar cell materials, called perovskites, are closing in on silicon with top efficiencies of 22%. Not only are the perovskites cheaper than silicon, they can also be tuned to absorb specific frequencies of light by tweaking their chemical recipe.

Eight Advantages of LandVac Tempered Vacuum Insulated Glass

01.Thermal Insulation
U-value as low as 0.4 W/(m2·K). A 8.3 mm thick LandVac has better thermal insulation effect than the 1.5 m thick brick wall.
Thanks to the high vacuum chamber of LandVac, which effectively blocks the thermal transmission, the thermal insulation performance of LandVac is 2-4 times better than insulated glass and 6-10 times better than single pane glass. The properties of this product meet all international thermal transmittance requirements on windows and doors for passive houses.

02.Noise Reduction
With its weighted sound reduction index exceeding 36 dB, LandVac makes rooms in downtown quiet like a library.
Thanks to the high vacuum chamber of LandVac , which effectively blocks the sound transmission, the sound insulation performance is far better than insulated glass. It has remarkable acoustic properties against high penetrative medium and low frequency noises such as traffic and construction noises.

03.Free of condensation
Free of condensation even when the temperature falls below -70℃. Ultra low dew point allows LandVac in buildings and freezers to maintain their exceptional transparency.
LandVac effectively eliminates the dew condensation between glass layers. Meanwhile, the high thermal resistance property significantly lowers the dew point of LandVac surface as well.

04.Fully Tempered
Surface stress and granularity meet tempered glass standards and passed several key safety tests including wind resistance test and impact test. Each piece of 8.3 mm thick LandVac can withstand the pressure of a 1.7 m tall sand column, equivalent to 1 m2 of LandVac having 20 adults with an average body weight of 70 kg standing on the surface.
By adopting low temperature sealing technology, LandVac completely retains the high strength, impact resistance, and other safety attributes of tempered glass. In case the glass breaks, it shatters into small and less harmful honeycomb shaped particles.

05.Thin Structure
The 8.3 mm thick LandVac weights only 20 Kg/m2, considerably reducing the costs for components, storage and logistic operations.
In comparison with triple-pane insulated glass, LandVac has only a quarter of its thickness and weighs at least 12 kg less per square meter while managing a better U-value.

06.Outstanding Environmental Adaptability
Since there is no thermal expansion or contraction in the high vacuum chamber of LandVac, the use of LandVac is not limited by geographical locations or elevation.
Furthermore, whether it’s mounted horizontally or with an angle, the U-value of LandVac remains constant regardless of the installation position, which ensures excellent energy saving effect.

07.Super Long Life
The service life expectancy of LandVac exceeds 25 years.
By using flexible edge sealing materials, LandVac overcomes the seal failure problem caused by fragile sealing materials especially in the environment with big temperature difference between the inner and outer glass surfaces. Moreover, with the assistance of built-in high efficiency getter material, it can sustain a high level of vacuum for a long time.

08.Easy to Replace
LandVac will make historic building restoration work easy and safe.
A single piece of LandVac is only 8.3 mm in thickness. When upgrading a single pane window, LandVac can be easily fitted into the original window frames to better retain the original shape of the building.
