Intelligent Automatic Detection Technology and Device for the Detection of Spontaneous Breakage of Tempered Glass

Spontaneous breakage of tempered glass, known as “cancer of glass,” is a world-class safety issue that is most common in architectural glass applications but hard to detect. By revealing the correlation between the impurity particles in the tempered glass and the distribution of stress field in the surrounding area, the research put forward the criteria of spontaneous glass breakage detection for the first time and developed the method for automatic detection of defects in existing architectural glass -- polariscope scanning method, device, and software, providing an effective way to the diagnosis of “glass cancer”. The intelligent glass curtain wall climbing robot with dual-cup negative pressure adsorption developed by the project can easily climb across the seams of frameless curtain glass, ideal for frameless curtain glass inspection. The equipment is able to automatically, effectively, and safely carry detection devices to perform inspection of high-rise glass curtain wall risk through remote sensing and control of the climbing robot, enhancing the reliability of detecting data as well as the safety, flexibility, and detectable items of on-site operation. Detection data and images are transmitted to the ground level through 4G wireless network, overcoming the shortfalls of traditional hand-held devices and manual operation.
the project was evaluated as original technology innovation by the science and technology achievement appraisal of China Building Materials Federation. The experts conclude that the tempered glass spontaneous breakage risk detection and polariscope scanning method have effectively solved the technical problem associated with the diagnosis of spontaneous tempered glass explosion. It is also concluded that the outstanding innovation achievement bridges a domestic and international gap with its overall technology in a world leading position.

China’s First CdTe Power Glass Successfully Rolled off the Production Line

Recently, China’s first and the world’s largest single CdTe power glass panel successfully rolled off the production line in Chengdu. The glass, known as “oil well hanging on the wall” can generate enormous amount of energy, overturning the traditional perception of curtain wall as the “shelter material”.
The production line is the fruit of the joint effort by Bengbu Glass Industrial Design Institute and its affiliated R&D teams in Germany and U.S. after nearly ten years of hard work. With integration of innovative high-end materials and glass substrate technology, the institute has the completely independent intellectual property. By evenly coating a 4um (equivalent to 1% of a human hair) thin CdTe photovoltaic film over insulated semiconductor glass, an ordinary glass becomes a revolutionary building material that can generate power. With the 1.92 square meter single pane size and conversion efficiency up to 17.8%, the product can generate 260 to 270 kWh each year and has successfully realized the dynamic integration of glass and PV material. As a green, recyclable, and power generating versatile building material, the product is an ideal alternative to traditional bricks and curtain walls, laying a solid foundation for the large-scale implementation of PV integrated building constructions.

German Scientists Develop Fluidic Smart Windows

Scientists from the Jena Friedrich Schiller University in Germany have presented a prototype of smart glass - LaWin that can block sunlight at different levels through iron particles in the liquid, collect thermal energy to heat the room, and control the lighting. The smart glass can be used in the façades of buildings.
In the past, most of the smart window systems are electrochromic. They change tint or opacity in response to electrical signals. This new system has similar applications but takes a completely different approach. To allow windows to carry liquid and heat, new glass materials are developed, into which large-area channel structures are integrated. These channels are used for circulating functional fluids. Depending on the number of the particles in the liquid, the liquid itself acquires different shades of grey, or turns completely black.
Although the manufacturing process will be more complex than other smart glass, researchers say that the technology should be scalable to standard sizes of window frames, including double and triple-glazing frames.

Scientists Create New Type of Glass Made from Metal Organic Compounds

Traditional glass is made from silicon dioxide. We may also have a general idea that materials like boron, polymers and metals have also been used in the process. However, researchers at Pennsylvania State University have made a breakthrough recently and developed zinc-based metal-organic glass. The material has been named ZIF-62. the new glass has a zinc atom surrounded by two organic compounds, imidazolate and benzimidazolate to create a metal-organic Framework. These new materials form glass more readily than other types, and are much more pliable with the same pyramid shaped atomic structure as silica glass.
Traditionally, silica glass is known to have the best glass-forming ability, but according to the researchers, ZIF-62 is better. In fact, ZIF-62 has outperformed 50 existing types of glass, and is much more pliable than silica-based glass. The researchers also found that by making adjustments to the recipe, the more benzimidazolate they added, the better the material’s glass-forming ability became. Of cause, in comparison to the process for silica glass that has gone through thousands of years of refinement, ZIF-62 still has its shortcomings. At its early state, it’s hard for the new material to compete with the traditional manufacturing process as the organic compounds first need to be synthesized before making this metal-organic glass.
In the future, the researchers are also planning to carry out further study on other metallic-organic glass recipes, including a potential cobalt-based glass.

U.S. Invents Thermochromic Glass Converting Sunlight into Electricity

Solar panels have made great progress in recent year, changing from bulky panels to tinted glass.  But, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States Department of Energy is now one step ahead. NREL recently announced the invention of a solar energy glass that provides shading and energy generation when the temperature rises.
The appearance of this special solar energy glass will change when exposed in sunlight, caused by the radiation of specific molecules under heat. The methylamine molecules stored in the switchable layer are driven out in responding to heat by transforming from transparent to tinted.   As the window darkens, it generates electricity. The photosensitive glass will block 97% of visible light in darkened state, comparing to 33% shading rate in its transparent state.
When sunlight or heating unit is moved away from the window device, it will cool down. The methylamine molecules re-absorb into the window material and the glass appears transparent.  Even in darkened state, this thermochromic glass will still achieve a solar power conversion efficiency of 11.3 percent, the highest in its kind.

US Scientists Developed New Glass Battery

John Goodenough, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, recently published a paper on the development of a new battery technology. The new technology uses glass doped with alkali-metal atoms such as lithium or sodium as the battery electrolyte (the medium that transports the ions between the anode and the cathode during battery charging or discharging).

They find, for instance, that the lithium- or sodium-glass battery has three times the energy storage capacity of a comparable lithium-ion battery. But its electrolyte is neither flammable nor volatile, and it doesn’t appear to build up the spiky “dendrites” that have plagued lithium-ions as they charge and discharge repeatedly and can ultimately short out, causing battery fires. Besides, the glass battery charges in “minutes rather than hours and early tests of their technology suggest it’s also capable of perhaps thousands of charge-discharge cycles, and could perform well in both extremely cold and hot weather. (Initial estimates place its operating range between below -20º C and 60º C.)
Goodenough said that his team is ready to welcome the golden moment. The next step is to solve the issues with the cathode. Commercialization is possible after practical application testing.

While the prices for these houses easily exceed 10M, it has been one of the preferred communities for many wealthy families. After ID registration at the entrance gate, we were permitted to tour the area. The LandVac installation project is located on the west side of the top floor. The glass selected for this project is the laminated LandVac, with maximum size up to 1755*1865mm. The actual sizes of the customized glass are carefully adjusted based on the sunlight exposure of each wall and their particular positions. While the performance of thermal insulation, energy savings, and noise reduction are optimized, sufficient daylight in the structure is also warranted.

On our arrival, Mr. Chen, one of the owners, greeted us warmly. Talking about the LandVac, he said with a big smile, “I’ve been in building materials business for several decades and handled all types of materials.  Before, the Low-E insulated glass with U-value 1.8W/(㎡·K) is already considered a great product. Now LandVac with U-value 0.4W/(㎡·K) , it’s the first time I’ve seen. I placed the order without hesitation when i saw the samples.” He then invited us to the installation site. Stepping into the sunroom on the west side of the 3rd floor, we were surrounded by heat waves. With outdoor temperature reaching 30 degree Celsius, the temperature inside the sunroom was steaming hot like that in an oven. Looking at the LandVac stacked on the floor, ready for installation, Mr. Chen said, “hot or not, let’s wait and see tomorrow.”
In the afternoon of the following day, we visited the place again to see the sunroom that just had glass replaced by LandVac. With sunshine strong as the previous day, the indoor temperature was obviously much cooler. The burning feeling was gone. I looked at the thermometer. It showed that the temperature was 6-7 degrees Celsius lower than outdoor. Meanwhile, before the replacement, you could hear the traffic noise from the streets. After the glass all got replaced by LandVac, the vacuum chamber of LandVac effectively blocked sound transmission. Having door and windows closed, the room shut also the noise out. Mr. Chen said that the thermal and noise insulation effects were so impressive that he would make LandVac his number one choice for windows and doors in his future projects.
LandVac is fully tempered vacuum insulated glass developed by LandGlass with independent intellectual property rights after eight years of devoted work. It has demonstrated outstanding properties in thermal insulation and energy conservation. It is now summertime and we only enjoy the benefits of heat and noise reduction brought to us by LandVac. In the coming time, we will also be able to experience all other advantages LandVac offers, such as free of condensation and great impact resistance. LandVac will help you to build a comfortable environment and improve the quality of life.

The composition of chillers in glass tempering furnace and how it works

The composition of chillers in the glass tempering furnace : the chillers are composed of several chiller assemblies, each consisting of a number of small air boxes and an air distribution box, connected to be an integrated device through the chiller frame.

How the chiller in the glass tempering furnace works: The air distribution boxes are connected to the blowing system through canvas tubes. The cooling air will fill the air chambers of all small air box via the distribution box, flowing horizontally in these small air boxes and blowing out through the aluminum nozzles to quench the tempered glass.

China Made “Ultra-thin Glass”in about the Thickness of A4 Paper

A team led by Cao Xin, the Deputy President of Bengbu Glass Research Institute, a research unit of China National Building Material Co., Ltd, was carrying out a falling ball test on the ultra-thin glass developed by them. He tested the glass by dropping a steel ball of 55 grams onto it from a meter above. That impact was equivalent to the force of a car running at 150 kilometers per hour. The glass remained intact.

The sheet glass being tested just came off the production line in April, 2018. This ultra-thin glass is only 0.12 millimeter thick, the thinnest glass in the world manufactured using the float process. As the ultra-thin glass can withstand such a large impact, no wonder Cao Xin claims it to be the world’s stunning achievement.

Ultra-thin glass refers to glass with a thickness range from 0.1-1.1mm. It is one of the core materials in the electronic display industry and used in display screens for mobile phones, computers and televisions. The thinner the glass, the better its transparency and flexibility, and the lighter its weight.  0.12 mm is truly among the thinnest. As Mr. Cao said, the next goal for the institute is to reduce the thickness to 0.1 mm and aims to take a lead position in the world’s ultra-thin glass industry.

Application of Low-E Glass in Vacuum Insulated Glass

Until now, the ultimate usage state of Low-E glasses in the overseas and domestic markets is mostly appearing in the insulating glass. It is because the heat transfer coefficient of the exterior surface of the building window glass is composed of 18% radiation and 82% convection and conduction, while that in the interior surface of the building window glass is composed of 58% radiation and 42% convection and conduction. When the insulating glass is formed, a reasonable thickness of the air layer will further lower the percentage of convection heat transfer. For the vacuum insulated glass, the air in the air layer is completely drawn away resulting in a high vacuum with pressure lower than 0.1Pa. Basically, it has removed the convection, conduction and heat transfer of the gases.

The Low-E glass is the raw material for producing vacuum insulated glasses. When Low-E glass and clear glass are used to produce vacuum insulated glasses, it works almost exactly the same way as a regular vacuum glass flask. The radiation rate of the coated Low-E glass has achieved below 0.11, significantly lowering the heat transfer coefficient of the vacuum insulated glass contributing to the elevation the thermal insulation performance of the vacuum insulated glass. With the widespread use of the vacuum insulated glasses, the application conditions of Low-E glasses has become more enriching. The vacuum insulated glasses will have a wide variety of safety glass.
